Darth Qarthan Dracken

This background document will be a summary of different events, most of which happened ingame. Some details will be vague as I do not want to misrepresent RP that happened 6-7 years ago because I remember it incorrectly. Things that have not happened ingame between me and other players will be denoted with a * in the title of that section.

Growing up*
Qarthan was enrolled in the sith academy on Korriban by his parents at a very young age. Some acolytes whispered that he was abandoned as an infant. Whatever the case, he was practically raised under the tutelage of Sith overseers.
Not much is known of his early years, other than him being a model student, excelling at every task the overseers put before him, and, by virtue of his pureblood heritage, he avoided some of the harsher treatments that young acolytes are put through.

When he was around ten years of age his grandfather, a lord by the name of Dracken, revealed himself to Qarthan, beginning a more focused regimen of training in the use of the force. This training, technically an act of nepotism, gave him an edge against the other acolytes who would only receive the more general training of the overseers.

Lord Dracken would also bring Qarthan along on trips, searching for ancient artifacts. Many of Qarthans fondest childhood memories is of treasure hunting with his grandfather, and also his biggest source of pain from that time, as the last of the treasure hunts ended with an accident that cost Lord Dracken his life.

Returning to Korriban without his grandfather, Qarthan drew on the pain and loss of Lord Drackens death and used that power to pass his trials in an expedient fashion.

During his trials he caught the attention of a Darth who acquired the young acolyte and added him to her powerbase.

Becoming a Lord
Arriving on Dromund Kaas, at the stronghold of the Darth who had claimed him, Qarthan became an apprentice to the Darth, but trained under her master-at-arms.

He earned a reputation for being strong with the force by applying the teachings of his grandfather during the duels that all apprentices had to fight in, defeating more than one opponent in the opening rounds with a force choke that nearly killed the other apprentice.

Building on this reputation and his continued improvement under the Darth, he eventually gained his Lord title at an age of just 21 years taking the name Dracken, after his grandfather. When the Darth died however, he drifted aimlessly for a while. (The guild died)
He eventually returned to Korriban, finding something he didn't expect.

Claiming a slave*

What follows is the unedited background story for Qarthan and another character that we wrote in unison.

Riwien lived in a small village in the outskirts of Aleera on the planet Alderaan. Her parents were farmers and together with her older brother and a twin sister she had a peaceful childhood.

When Riwien was 16 the village was attacked one night by a band of Sith marauder acolytes from the Sith academy. Almost her entire village was slaughtered in what seemed in minutes but to Riwien it seemed like a lifetime. She stood frozen as she watched the horror around her until she suddenly hear the sound of a light saber and saw the light as it ascended before her throat and a dark figure came up behind her grinning wickedly.

As the dark figure prepared to strike as he had done so many times already this night, a young marauder looked up at the two. The young marauder felt a sudden rush inside him and he had no doubt that this girl had a connection with the force that he had only heard of in tales at the academy. The lust for power and the girl before him forced his hand. He wanted her for his own.

The next thing Riwien knew, a glowing red light saber was sliding out the chest piece of the dark figure above her with a hiss and a small wisp of steam rising from the rapidly heating chest plate. The dark figure shuddered and collapsed in a pile at her feet while yet another hooded figure stepped up, looking down at her with an odd gleam in his eyes.

He felt a shudder in his very core when the girl looked back into his eyes with her emerald green eyes almost glowing with the force.

Suddenly a messenger came running telling him to take the girl to the rest of the slaves. He had to obey... for now... The last few survivors from the village were gathered and the dark figure was swiped away by orders she did not understand. She huddled against a young woman whom she knew to be her brother's friend and hid in her skirts, until they were all taken away. The last thing she heard was the death screams of a young girl... her sister...

All the dark figure saw as she returned to their masters was that the slaves had been hurtled together and the young girl lying dead on the ground... Anger overwhelmed him but reason kept him in place... She was no more...

Five years later...

A day in the academy a Sith Lord Qarthan walked past the slave pens and something caught his eyes. It was a young human female whom was getting punished by one of the Overseers.

This was not unusual for Qarthan but there was something about the young woman.

He went about his business but the young woman kept creeping into his mind. When the day was over and he was to go home for the day he found himself at the pens, not realizing he had gone there. He walked from cage to cage until he saw here lying in a cage unconscious from her beating. Her hand was sticking out through the bars and strangely he went to touch her fair skin but then it happened, the young woman opened her eyes looking at him with large emerald green eyes glowing with the power of the force... just like five years ago, the feeling just as strong as it had been just a minute ago he stood with his lightsaber to her throat... but how was this possible he saw her dead on the ground. The woman moaned in pain before she fell back in the blackness of unconsciousness... he quickly left the pens... the image of the young woman hunting his thoughts...

Lying in his bedchamber unable to sleep hunted by the emerald eyes... The power of the force so strong, so wild and untamed... but how could he just feel it within her? Again the strong feeling that he had to have her, own her... own her power. She was his and had always been...

In the days to follow he found out that she was not thought to have any force sensitivity even through her trail of blood. But he knew better... He felt it clearly almost as if he could sense her all the time, where she was. He could see through her ruse, see her strong spirit and her hidden spite for her enslavement. She had not been truly broken but she played her part well, playing the good servant and that had clearly kept her alive all these years...

Deciding that he wanted her for his own, he went up one day to the slavekeeper to buy her from the academy. He asked the keeper politely enough for permission to buy her, but the keeper was a smart man and was suspicious that Qarthan wanted that exact slave among them all. As Riwien watched, the Keeper and his two guards started asking Qarthan questions and bullying him, judging by his eyes which had gotten narrower, the keeper wasn't a smart man after all.

Watching Qarthans jaw clenching tighter and tighter, and his eyes narrowing with anger, Riwien felt something that reminded her of distant rolling thunder, but she knew it was him.

Suddenly Qarthan literally exploded, his eyes glowing a slightly more red with rage as his lightsabers ignited with a hiss, drawn faster than Riwiens eyes could follow. One of the two guards was dead and falling to the floor before the lightsabers had even reached their full length. While Qarthan turned his blades on the other guard, the slave keeper managed to ignite his lightsaber and prepare for the fight. As it turned out, the keeper, way more experienced than the young Lord, had an edge in the battle, pushing Qarthan backwards with each step and seemingly blocking each of Qarthans blades as if he had two swords himself. Suddenly Qarthan slipped and fell backwards out of balance, using this to his advantage, the keeper stepped in with a sweeping blow which would have taken Qarthans head off had he not thrown himself farther backwards. The very tip of the keepers' lightsaber connected with Qarthans face, dragging a wide gash across Qarthans one cheek, his nose and up his eyebrow. Blood spurted in the air as the burning blade seared Qarthans flesh as fast as it cut through it. Riwien couldn't help but feel concern for this young man who was her enemy, but somehow seemed familiar.

As Qarthan hit the floor he seemed to lose consciousness for a moment, but as the keeper was about to deliver the final blow, Qarthans eyes flew open, now positively ablaze with rage. A sudden thrum of power threw the keeper backwards, making him somersault through the air, but stopping midair about three metres from the floor and hanging there sprawling and fighting some invisible power, suddenly looking unsecure. Qarthan rose slowly from the floor, his eyes blazing red, but not paying Riwien any attention anymore, only the man floating in midair seemed to have his attention as he raised a single hand and making a crushing motion. Where Riwien expected the man to choke, she had seen the keeper do it often enough himself, she was surprised and horrified as the man seemed to cave completely in on himself, spraying blood and gore on the floor below him.

She was frightened as Qarthan slowly turned his eyes towards her, and the slave girls around her whimpered with panic, but as their eyes met the fury in them seemed to die out and he remembered why he had come. His shoulders slouching, Qarthan stood amidst the bloodshed, seemingly not understanding what he had done, but trying to figure out what to do.

After a couple of hours, the ship landed on Balmorra and Qarthan dragged her into the city to an apartment and setting her down on the bed before taking a deep breath and relaxing for the first time since he entered the slave pens.

Suddenly he started moving towards Riwiens cage, cutting off the locks of the slave cages as he went, opening hers last and grabbing her by the arm firmly and pulling her along. None of the other slaves moved an inch, still paralyzed with fear, but as Riwien felt his firm grip and decided that it was not a brutal grip, she followed, though still frightened of the man; her instinct for freedom was stronger. The next couple of hours seemed to pass as in a dream, Qarthan dragging her to his ship, and lifting off, commanding the spaceport authorities to 'stay out of sith business'.

Pledging allegiance
A couple of years passed after Qarthan rescued Riwien from the slave pit. During this time they became close, then separated as Riwien was kidnapped, and found each other once more. To protect Riwien, they posed her as Qarthans apprentice as he pledged allegiance to a new Darth named Xarathis.

He forged alliances with other lords in Xarathis' powerbase, namely a pureblooded lord named Bar'tolo'mew and a human named Telvaris.

Some time later, Qarthan and Riwien had a falling out. It happened when Qarthan had been away on an expedition to Malachor to retrieve dark side knowledge. He found her together with Bar'tolos apprentice, a young human called Legion. Naming her a true Sith he drew away from her and threw his efforts into gaining power.

Taking several more trips to Malachor, he managed to establish contact with an entity he thought was the spirit of Darth Traya. It turned out, however, that it was merely an echo of her power, manifesting as an image. He did manage to glean some insights from the encounter and he set up a base on Malachor, to which he would return regularly to meditate and steep himself in the dark side there.

Back in Xarathis' powerbase, things were going well, the three lords, Bart, Telvaris and Qarthan managed to stay alive and strong as other lords rose and fell. It was also during this time that Qarthan briefly encountered Exillus for the first time.

The relationship between Riwien and Qarthan thawed a bit during this period as well and he resumed trying to teach her the ways of the force while also studying the unique bond between them.

At some point before the invasion of the infinite empire, Qarthan retired to his sanctuary on Malachor in preparation for the birth of Riwiens first child, a son, which he predicted accurately would be troublesome. Through their unique connection, he managed to save Riwiens life, even though he was millions of miles away. Because of them being connected at the time of her sons birth, the link extended somewhat to the son as well.

An unexpected encounter*

The following is an excerpt of anothers background story, detailing an encounter with Qarthan. After the section, I will detail the incident from Qarthans viewpoint. This encounter took place somewhere during the five year timeskip in game continuity.

During one such trip back to the destroyed world, to further experiment with the twins, the dark lords' experiments was cut short by the appearance of another ship near his. Talking briefly with the intruder, a sith lord named Dracken, Darth Nefax invited the pureblood aboard his mobile sanctuary.

Lord Dracken was revealed to be a formidable warrior, as per his nature Darth Nefax naturally tested the new arrivals strength against his own. Though the warrior lacked the strength in force abilities of the dark lord he still managed to satisfy with brute strength and rage, holding on through various barrages from Darth Nefax and slowly gaining ground. The fighting ended once the pureblood got too close to the Darth, forcing him to trigger a cage and capture the sith.

Darth Nefax congratulated Lord Dracken while the kittens squealed in glee at the display of the power from both sith. Slowly calming the young sith, Darth Nefax suggested a trade, Dracken would train the twins in lightsabre combat, in return he would gain his freedom, something the dark lord would have given anyway, and personal secrets from the vast knowledge of the Darth.

Dracken agreed begrudgingly at first, but as he studied the two cathar younglings as they celebrated the Darth's proposal behind his back, dark force streaming out from them in their uncontrolled revelry, he began to become intrigued as well.

For the next many months, the pureblood stayed on the dark lords' sanctuary, training the cathar kittens how to forcefully wield their sabres and in return he gained insight into many secrets on how to manipulate the darkness surrounding the ruined world.

Once Lord Dracken was satisfied with the twins grasp on the various techniques and a few of the powers accompanying the basic fighting styles, the two sith continued their travels separately. Darth Nefax returned to his secret laboratory having gleaned new ideas from the meeting with the young sith.

One day, returning to Malachor from one of his forays into the wider galaxy, Qarthan encountered a mysterious ship circling the planet. Normally Qarthan would have snuck his ship past, outside of sensor range. This time however, the ship was hovering dangerously close to his hideout and so, he contacted it to find out who was searching for him. As it turned out, the Darth aboard the ship had no idea that he had been near Qarthans sanctuary, and invited him over to learn more of him.

Wanting to measure himself against Qarthan, the Darth proposed a bout, which Qarthan was only too happy to oblige. The duel went back and forth, Nefax, the Darth, being more knowledgeable with the force, and Qarthan being physically stronger and driven by controlled anger. Eventually, Qarthan managed to push the Darth enough that he activated a trap which caught Qarthan and ended the duel.

Having seen Qarthans proficiency with sabers, Nefax asked if he would be willing to train two young cathar whom Nefax were raising. Qarthans reward for this, apart from his freedom, would be knowledge imparted by the Darth himself about many different subjects.

Not being in any particular rush, Qarthan agreed to train the two younglings and stayed aboard Darth Nefaxs ship for a matter of months. Spending most of the time on the basic forms of Shii-cho, Qarthan also taught them a few special moves of his own making. When they were satisfied with the younglings' progress, the two sith parted ways, Nefax providing Qarthan with a holocron that would allow him to further explore the teachings imparted by the Darth.

Over the next five years, Qarthan had little contact with the outside world, only appearing to Riwien and her son now and then, to converse with Riwien, and to test her sons abilities. When the invasion of the infinite empire had rolled by, Qarthan figured it was time to return to the galaxy at large.

Returning home*
Thinking he would take advantage of the chaos caused by the invasion, Qarthan returned from his sanctuary, stronger in the dark side than he had ever been. Seeking out old allies, he began reconstructing his powerbase.

Meeting a young sith named Shayvara, he was introduced to House Thrakkus. The head of the house, Darth Vhalkan, seeing the potential of the powerful young lord, invited him to stay for a while and serve the house. Figuring it as a way to gain powerful allies, Qarthan agreed to the Darths proposal and started working with him.

Over the next several months, Qarthan became close with the family, though mostly the parents as their daughters were off on various tasks. Vhalkan saw only the powerful tool at his disposal and therefore treated Qarthan as a valuable servant, but his wife, Shiiyara became a friend, in as much as two Sith can become so.

On a mission for the Darth, Qarthan discovered what Vhalkan was working on, and that it could be considered treason to the empire.

Using the knowledge for leverage Qarthan manipulated Vhalkan into supporting his claim on a Darth title, following her husbands lead, Shiiyara also supported the claim. Pressuring a Darth in this way, however, is not a play you make without consequences and the relationship between Vhalkan and Qarthan quickly cooled after Qarthan gaining his title.

Deciding that it would be better than waking up to a knife in his gut, Qarthan left House Thrakkus, much to the surprise of Shiiyara, who did not know of their deal.

Continuing to build his own powerbase, Qarthan was not surprised to hear that Vhalkan had been found out through other means, though he was a bit miffed that Shiiyara had also lost her title as a consequence.

Deciding to extend an offer of support to reclaim her Darthship Qarthan contacted Shiiyara and learnt that she was part of a coalition of Sith which consisted of her and an old acquaintance, Darth Exillus.
